The Institute of Public Accountants

The Institute of Public Accountants (IPA) is a professional organisation for accountants recognised for their practical, hands-on skills and a broad understanding of the total business environment.

The IPA is a progressive, responsive accounting body committed to integrity, professionalism and professional development. It represents more than 24,000 members and students working in industry, commerce, government, academia and private practice.

Our Mission

To provide professional recognition and support to drive business success.

The Institute of Public Accountants (IPA) has been at the forefront of driving professionalism, influencing policy and representing the interests of its members for 90 years.

First established as the Institute of Factory and Cost Accountants in 1923, the IPA has evolved into one of the peak accounting bodies in Australia, with over 24,000 members and students in Australia and over 50 countries worldwide.

The majority of IPA members are at the ‘coal face’ of small business, small to medium enterprises and small to medium practices.  We understand these sectors because we practice, work and operate in them.

We are committed to promoting the interests of our members, small business and SMEs to enable them to get on with doing what they do best – contribute to the wellbeing of Australian consumers and the Australian economy.

By raising the issues of concern to small business with government, regulators, media, consumers, and other key stakeholders, the IPA has become the credible voice of small business.
