Looming federal election puts a dampener on dealmaking

The prospect of a federal election in May is tempering the appetite of foreign companies looking to carry out an Australian transaction while the nation’s political future remains uncertain.

Information specialist Acuris, formerly the Mergermarket Group, said the total value of mergers and acquisitions activity in Australia last year reached $US88.5 billion ($123bn) in 583 public market transactions.
